As part of the tripartite agreement with the City of Montréal and the Québec government, Sanimax has undertaken, among other things, to build ventilated garages to keep trailers awaiting treatment in a controlled environment.
In 2024, Sanimax filed several complete and compliant applications to obtain the permits required under this agreement. The permit application for the construction of the garages was filed in June 2024, followed in September 2024 by that for the air handling system. One year later, on June 25, we finally obtained the construction permit for the garages, with no changes required to the plans submitted.
It’s a step forward, but it’s only part of the process. In the context of mediation, Sanimax has retained the services of another engineering consulting firm to analyze the proposed solutions.
To order materials and equipment and begin construction of the garages, we still need a second permit: one authorizing installation of the ventilation system required for safe and efficient operation of the garages. This system is essential, not only to ensure the health and safety of our employees, but also to prevent the organic material on hand from degrading too quickly. Without ventilation, a closed garage in summer practically becomes an oven, where heat and gases accumulate. The need for an adequate ventilation system on this project is well known to everyone involved.
As soon as we have all the necessary authorizations, we’ll be ready to start ordering the equipment, which takes around eight months to deliver, finalize the technical plans and start building the garages. But the longer it takes to obtain the necessary permits, the more it delays the implementation of solutions that will benefit residents. The entire Sanimax team is ready and motivated to bring this project to fruition, as has already been successfully done at our Lévis and Saint-Hyacinthe plants.
In addition, mediation initiated by the Québec government is continuing in order to settle the various aspects of this case, including that relating to the air handling system.
Sanimax remains fully committed to working with the City and the government to move this project forward, for the benefit of the citizens of RDP-PAT.
